The Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) Division of Research (DOR) invites applications for a full-time, limited term fellowship training position with its Vaccine Study Center (http://vaccines.kaiser.org). This fellowship calls for candidates with training in epidemiology/biostatistics with interest in conducting vaccine and other infectious disease research. This individual will work in collaboration with Research Scientists at the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center (KPVSC) to design, develop and direct well-defined research, write and present papers, prepare grant proposals, provide consultation and direction to programmer/analysts regarding data management and analysis strategies.
The DOR, located in Oakland, California, includes more than 60 scientists who participate in well-developed programs in infectious disease, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, health care delivery and policy, behavioral health and aging, cancer, and women’s and children’s health. Investigators have access to rich clinical data from 4 million KPNC members from the San Francisco Bay Area. Investigators are primarily supported by grant and contract funding from federal and other external sources. The successful applicant will have opportunities to further develop his/her research skills in a rich environment with a diverse patient population, extensive electronic infrastructure and comprehensive data capture, and long-standing history of clinically impactful research while being mentored by experienced research scientists.
Embedded within the DOR, the KPVSC is a leader in evaluating vaccine safety and effectiveness with a long history of collaboration with multiple agencies, particularly the CDC’s Immunization Safety Office. The KPVSC has also been engaged in Phase II, III, and IV vaccine trials, collaborating with the pharmaceutical industry and FDA to help bring new vaccines into licensure and then to evaluate and ensure their safety. The KPVSC currently has a team of over 35 individuals, including programmer analysts, project managers, research assistants, nurses, and physicians (located at medical centers throughout the KPNC Region).
Required qualifications include a PhD, or Dr. P.H, or Sc.D. in epidemiology/public health or MD degree with training in epidemiology or equivalent. Preference will be given to applicants with strong analytic and writing skills and a demonstrated ability to write successful grant proposals and publish papers. A history of fruitful collaborations in academic or healthcare settings, experience working with electronic medical records, and knowledge of general research methods used in epidemiological and health services research is preferred.
