RTI International seeks a prospect for the Medicare Implementation Internship in the Center for Health Care Quality and Outcomes within the Social, Statistical, & Environmental Sciences (SSES) unit.

This internship is a contract position. The employment contract is administered by Greene Resources Powered by Array, RTI’s supplemental staffing partner.

The Center for Health Care Quality and Outcomes focuses on analyzing federal, state, and local policies and programs related to health care quality and care experiences. We combine innovative research and evaluation methods with deep subject matter expertise in health care quality, access, and outcomes.

The intern will work with the project team on a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) funded project. The intern will use various datasets to perform quantitative analyses such as examining participating primary care practices’ quality performance over time and exploring correlations among quality measures. The intern will prepare a final document, such as a report or memorandum, based on the findings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop and improve skills using statistical software to analyze large datasets.
  • Enhance oral and written communication skills.
  • Gain understanding of Medicare alternative payment models.


  • Conduct quantitative program data analyses using Stata.
  • Support development of final report or memo based on analysis results.
  • Support quality management activities (e.g. quality control for data collection).
  • Contribute to client-directed ad hoc analyses.
  • Assist with project team coordination and administrative operations.

Additional Information

This virtual paid internship will take place from June 2024 through August 2024. The internship requires a minimum commitment of 35 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business hours, Monday through Friday.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled and active undergraduate student (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) OR master’s level student studying public health or health policy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or familiarity with quantitative research methodologies.
  • Experience with Stata, SAS, or R.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest in health policy, primary care, Medicare, payment reform, and care delivery transformation.
  • Students needing to fulfill an academic course credit or program requirement are welcomed to apply.
